In the first clinical study of this type, a group of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison discovered that the composition of the black grape (Vitis labrusca L., Vitaceae) helps to protect the heart in persons affected by coronary artery disease (Stein and co., 1999). According to the study, two weeks of grape juice therapy increases blood vessel dilatation (relaxation of the blood vessels), whilst at the same time reducing the harmful oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
Given its richness in sugars and carbohydrates, it is a natural source of energy for all people with additional requirements, such as sportsmen and women, growing children and people with low levels of sugar in the blood.

This aspect is reinforced when we consume grape raisins, in which case the carbohydrate and calorie content is three times higher than when we eat them fresh.
On the downside, this foodstuff is not suitable for people with diabetes, given the high glucose content. Nor is it the ideal fruit for obese people, due to the high number of calories.
On the other hand, it is highly suitable for children and the elderly, since the sugars are easily assimilated and benefited from. One of the components of grapes and wine is known as resveratrol.
This has important biological characteristics. It is anti-inflammatory and has effects on the metabolism of the lipids. It protects the heart and reduces the level of cholesterol. It also inhibits the aggregation of blood platelets.

This means the blood is less thick, thus preventing the formation of blood clots which can result in heart attacks and strokes.
The grapes are kept in a refrigerator without any problem for weeks. They need to be simply placed on cellulose, which absorbs the moisture. Plastic bags must be discarded. We do not recommend placing bunches of grapes next to apples, since these accelerate the grape maturity process.

The most common way to consume grapes is uncooked and ripe as a desert. Hygiene is fundamental, and the grapes must be washed in plenty of water. They can be combined with some kinds of meat, cheese and non-fatty fish, and with other fruits. Bon appetite.

Its high concentration of flavonoids and components such as resveratrol provide purple grapes with important antioxidant properties which, when combined with a healthy diet, allow the organism to act in a more efficient manner against cancerigenic agents which may exist in other foodstuffs. In consequence, these substances have greater effects against lung and prostate cancer.

Since pregnant women should not consume alcohol, we recommend consuming natural grapes instead of wine, since these have not been fermented and hence do not involve any risk to the foetus, whilst at the same time providing a large number of beneficial components, such as magnesium and folic acid, both for the mother and the development of the foetus.

The components of the grape prevent, to a large degree, the concentration of uric acid in articulations, and prevents affections such are as arthritis in the legs and feet, which is often accompanied by great pain.

Purple grapes contain a large number of antioxidant substances which act on the toxins which our body does not eliminate by itself or through sweating, and which, in some cases, can bring about low oxygenation of the skin and poor hydration.

The fibre it provides, when accompanied by a diet which is rich in vegetables, favours intestinal mobility and helps digestive regulation and the correct absorbing of foodstuffs during digestion.

Several studies have shown that the amount of Reserveratrol in black grapes has a positive influence on the circulatory and cardiovascular system. Improved blood flow helps prevent cardiovascular risks.

Grapes are capable of inhibiting the actions of a large number of bacteria, as has been shown in numerous clinical analyses carried out at Erciyes University in Turkey.

It has been proven that certain diets which contain a high percentage of fats can have a negative influence on the development of red corpuscles in the blood, for which reason the intake of foodstuffs rich in reservatol is recommended. One such food is the purple grape, which can help increase the number and quality of blood composition.

Grapes are recommended for all people who have problems retaining liquids, for example mothers after giving birth or elderly people with insufficient glucose levels.

A regular consumption of purple grapes helps to halt loss of sight resulting from old age and retina degradation. A study carried out in 2004 by several ophthalmologists at the American Archives of Ophthalmology showed that this effect can be boosted by eating three pieces of fruit a day, in addition to the grapes.

Studies carried out at the University of Ohio (USA) have shown that the reversatrol present in the purple grape directly benefits the walls of the heart and improves the operation of the valves which control the movements of this organ.

Several compounds included in the grape skin cause an inhibition of certain proteins, such as Endothelin, generated in the human body and which may cause increased artery pressure which needs regulating by way of the intake of foodstuffs such as purple grapes.

The flavonoids contained in the purple grape and its derivatives, such as wine, have beneficial properties for circulation, increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood and bringing about improved operation of the walls of the heart.

These grapes have an important concentration of vitamin B, which helps maintain good neuronal functioning, facilitating the nervous connections during periods of stress or ageing.
